Generating Trusted Storage Licenses

Trusted storage is a technology, used by FlexEnabled applications to store license rights, that allows hands-free activation. Users can obtain trusted storage licenses without downloading them from a web portal; instead, license rights are stored in an encrypted file on the local host’s drive.

The process of placing license rights in client trusted storage, also called activating an application, requires a utility on the customer’s system that communicates with FlexNet Operations. The utility sends a request for a particular product with particular terms. FlexNet Operations processes the request to determine if the system is entitled to the software, and if so, sends a response containing the corresponding license rights. The utility processes the response, which results in the license rights being stored in trusted storage.

The two types of trusted storage are:

client-side – license rights stored on an end-user system that are checked out by a licensed application
server-side – counted license rights stored on a license server system that are served in a corporate network
